An American Prayer Book (2009): The Canticles

THE CANTICLES

Venite (Psalm 95)

O come, let us sing to the Lord;*
let us heartily rejoice in the rock of our salvation.

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving*
and be glad in him with psalms

For the Lord is a great God*
and a great king above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth*
and the heights of the mountains are his also

The sea is his, for he made it,*
and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us worship and bow down*
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

For he is our God;*
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.

The canticle may end here with 'Glory to the Father…'

O that today you would listen to his voice:*
'Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
on that day at Massah in the wilderness,

'When your forebears tested me, and put me to the proof,*
though they had seen my works.

'Forty years long I detested that generation and said,*
"This people are wayward in their hearts;
they do not know my ways."

'So I swore in my wrath,*
"They shall not enter into my rest." '

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,*
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now*
and shall be for ever. Amen

Jubilate (Psalm 100)

O be joyful in the Lord, all the earth;*
serve the Lord with gladness
and come before his presence with a song.

Know that the Lord is God;*
it is he that has made us and we are his;
we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;*
give thanks to him and bless his name.

For the Lord is gracious; his steadfast love is everlasting,*
and his faithfulness endures from generation to generation.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,*
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now*
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Easter Anthems

Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us:*
so let us celebrate the feast.

not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness:*
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Christ once raised from the dead dies no more:*
death has no more dominion over him.

In dying he died to sin once for all:*
in living he lives to God.

See yourselves therefore as dead to sin:*
and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Christ has been raised from the dead:*
the first fruits of those who sleep.

For as by man came death:*
by man has come also the resurrection of the dead.

For as in Adam all die:*
even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Glory to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now*
and shall be for ever. Amen

Phos hilaron

O joyful light,
from the pure glory of the eternal heavenly Father,
O holy, blessed Jesus Christ.

As we come to the setting of the sun
and see the evening light,
we give thanks and praise to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit of God.

Worthy are you at all times
to be sung with holy voices,
O Son of God, O giver of life,
and to be glorified through all creation

or

Hail, gladdening Light, of his pure glory poured,
Who is the immortal Father, heavenly, blest,
Holiest of holies, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Now we are come to the sun's hour of rest,
The lights of evening round us shine,
We hymn the Father, Son and Holy Spirit divine

Worthy are you at all times to be sung
With undefiled tongue,
Son of our God, giver of life, alone:
Therefore in all the world your glories, Lord, they own.

or

Light of gladness, Lord of glory,
Jesus Christ our king most holy,
Shine among us in your mercy:
Earth and heaven join their hymn.

Let us sing at sun’s descending
As we see the lights of evening,
Father, Son, and Spirit praising
With the holy seraphim.

Son of God, through all the ages
Worthy of our holiest praises,
Yours the life that never ceases,
Light which never shall grow dim.

Te Deum

We praise you, O God,
we acclaim you as the Lord;*
all creation worships you,
the Father everlasting.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,*
the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise:

Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might,*
heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you;*
the noble fellowship of prophets praise you.

The white-robed army of martyrs praise you;*
throughout the world, the holy Church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded,
your true and only Son, worthy of all praise,*
the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the King of glory,*
the eternal Son of the Father.

When you took our flesh to set us free,*
you humbly chose the Virgin’s womb.

You overcame the sting of death*
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God’s right hand in glory:*
we believe that you will come to be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your people,*
bought with the price of your own blood,

and bring us with your saints*
to glory everlasting.

The Te Deum may end at this point.

Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance:*
govern and uphold them now and always.

Day by day we bless you:*
we praise your name for ever.

Keep us today, Lord, from all sin:*
have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy

Lord, show us your love and mercy,*
for we put our trust in you.

In you, Lord, is our hope.*
let us never be put to shame

The Song of Zechariah (Luke 1:68-79)

Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel,*
who has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty Savior,*
born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets God promised of old*
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all that hate us

To show mercy to our ancestors,*
and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath God swore to our father
Abraham:*
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear,*
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

And you, child, shall be called the prophet
of the Most High,*
for you will go before the Lord to prepare
his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation*
by the forgiveness of all their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God*
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,*
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now*
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,*
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

he has looked with favor on his lowly servant;*
from this day all generations will call me blessed;

the Almighty has done great things for me*
and holy is his name.

He has mercy on those who fear him,*
from generation to generation.

He has shown strength with his arm*
and has scattered the proud in their conceit,

casting down the mighty from their thrones*
and lifting up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things*
and sent the rich away empty.

He has come to the aid of his servant Israel*
to remember his promise of mercy,

The promise made to our ancestors,*
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now*
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Song of Simeon (Luke 2:29-32)

Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace*
your word has been fulfilled.

My own eyes have seen the salvation*
which you have prepared in the sight of every people;

A light to reveal you to the nations*
and the glory of your people Israel

Glory to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now*
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Surely God is my salvation;*
I will trust, and will not be afraid.

For the Lord is my strength and my song;*
and he has become my salvation.

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.*
And you will say in that day:
Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name;

Make known his deeds among the nations;*
proclaim that his name is exalted.

Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;*
let this be known in all the earth.

Shout aloud and sing for joy, O inhabitants of Zion,*
For great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Glory to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now*
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Song of the Three Young Men (28-34)

Bless the Lord God of our forebears,*
sing his praise and exalt him for ever.

Bless his holy and glorious name,*
sing his praise and exalt him for ever.

Bless him in his holy and glorious temple,*
sing his praise and exalt him for ever.

Bless him who beholds the depths,*
sing his praise and exalt him for ever.

Great and Wonderful (Revelation 15: 3,4 and 5: 13b)

Great and wonderful are your deeds, Lord God the Almighty.*
Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations.

Who shall not revere and praise your name, O Lord?*

All nations shall come and worship in your presence:*
for your just dealings have been revealed.

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb*
Be praise and honor, glory and might,*
for ever and ever. Amen.

O let the nations rejoice and be glad,*
for you will judge the peoples righteously
and govern the nations upon earth.

Let the peoples praise you, O God;*
let all the peoples praise you.

Then shall the earth bring forth her increase,*
and God, our own God, will bless us.

God will bless us,*
and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

Glory to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now*
and shall be for ever. Amen.

An American Prayer Book (2009): Alternative Forms of Morning and Evening Worship

ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF MORNING AND EVENING WORSHIP
FIRST FORM

GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

Instrumental music may be played. Hymns and songs may be sung. The minister may greet the people, who may greet each other.

The minister may read aloud one or more of the sentence of Scripture on pages 10-14, 18-19, and 33-34 or other suitable sentences of Scripture.

CONFESSION OF SIN

The minister then reads one or more of these sentences of Scripture.

When a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord; so turn and live. Ezekiel 18: 27,32

I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Psalm 51: 3

Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. Psalm 51: 9

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 51: 17

Rend your hearts, and not your garments. Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and relents over disaster. Joel 2: 13

To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us. Daniel 9: 9-10

Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.
Jeremiah 10: 24

Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew 3: 2

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
Luke 15: 18-19

Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you.
Psalm 143: 2

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1: 8-9

The minister says this Exhortation. He may omit the second paragraph.

Dear brothers and sisters, the Scriptures encourages us repeatedly to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not try to hide them from Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient hearts, so that we may receive forgiveness through God’s infinite goodness and mercy.

[We ought at all times humbly to admit our sins before God, but chiefly when we meet together to give thanks for the great benefits we have received at his hands, to offer the praise that is due him, to hear his holy word, and to ask what is necessary for our bodies and souls.]

Therefore let us approach the throne of our gracious God and say together:

Or he may omit the Exhortation, saying instead

Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.

All kneeling, this general Confession or another authorized General Confession is said by the whole congregation with the minister.

Heavenly Father, you have loved us with an everlasting love, but we have gone our own way. We have broken your holy laws and have left undone what we ought to have done. We are sorry for our sins and turn away from them. For the sake of your Son who died for us, forgive us, cleanse us, and change us. By your Holy Spirit enable us to live for you and to please you more and more each day; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

This Absolution or another authorized Absolution, or declaration of forgiveness, is pronounced by the priest alone standing; the congregation still kneeling.

God desires that none should perish but all should turn to Christ and live. In response to his call we acknowledge our sins. He pardons those who humbly repent and truly believe the gospel. Therefore we have peace, through Jesus Christ to whom be blessing and honor for ever.

The congregation answer AMEN.

Or instead of the Absolution the minister may say this prayer

Merciful God, grant to your faithful people pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Or this Word of Assurance may be said.

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the perfect offering for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1,2

Or a short period of silence may be kept.

O Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins.
Neither reward us according to our iniquities.

O God, merciful Father, you do not despise the sighing of a contrite heart nor the desires of the sorrowful: mercifully help us to pray in the midst of all our troubles and adversities, whenever they oppress us; and graciously hear us, that those evils, which the cunning and mischief of the devil or man work against us, should be brought to nothing; and by the providence of your goodness they may be dispersed; that we your servants, being hurt by no persecutions, may for ever give thanks to you in your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O Lord, arise, help us, and deliver us for your name's sake.

O God, we have heard with our ears, and our forebears have told us, the wonderful works you did in their day, and in the old time before them.

O Lord, arise, help, and deliver us for your honour.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son; and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. AMEN.

From our enemies defend us, O Christ.
Graciously look upon our afflictions.

Gaze with compassion upon the sorrows of our hearts.
Mercifully forgive the sins of your people.

Favourably with mercy hear our prayers.
O Son of David, have mercy on us.

Both now and for ever condescend to hear us, O Christ.
Graciously hear us, O Christ; graciously hear us, O Lord Christ.

O Lord, show us your mercy.
As we put our trust in you.

We humbly entreat you, O Father, mercifully to look upon on our weaknesses; and for the glory of your Name turn from us all those evils that we have justly deserved; and grant that in our troubles we put our whole trust and confidence in your mercy, and for ever serve you in holiness and purity of life, to your honour and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

The Litany ends with the Prayer of St Chrysostom and the Grace

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, you have given us grace to bring before you with one accord our common supplications; and promise that when two or three are gathered together in your name you will grant their requests; fulfill now, Lord, the desires and petitions of your servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. AMEN

The Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians. 13. 14.

GENERAL CONFESSIONS

Almighty God, Creator of all, you marvelously made us in your own image; but we have corrupted ourselves and damaged your likeness by rejecting your love and hurting our neighbors. We have done wrong and neglected to do right. We are sincerely sorry and heartily repent of our sins. Cleanse us and forgive us by the sacrifice of your Son; Remake us and lead us by your Spirit, the Comforter. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Almighty, most merciful God, we humbly admit that we need your help. We have gone our own way, not loving you as we ought nor loving our neighbor as ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed and in our failure to do what is right. We deserve your condemnation. Father, have mercy upon us and forgive us. Wipe out our sins and teach us to forgive others. Bring forth in us the fruit of your Spirit that we may live new lives to your glory. This we ask in the name of Jesus our Savior. AMEN.

Heavenly Father, we confess that we have sinned against you and our neighbor. We have walked in darkness rather than in light; we have named the name of Christ, but have not departed from iniquity. Have mercy upon us, we implore you; for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ forgive us all our sins; cleanse us by your Holy Spirit; quicken our consciences; and enable us to forgive others; that we may hereafter serve you in newness of life, to the glory of your holy name. AMEN.

Most merciful Father, our Creator and Judge, we acknowledge and confess that we have sinned against you by thought, word, and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart; and we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We earnestly repent, and are truly sorry of all our sins. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’ sake forgive us. And strengthen us to serve and obey you in lives wholly renewed by your Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

OCCASIONAL PRAYERS

These prayers may be used, as occasion may serve, in Morning Prayer or Evening Prayer before the Prayer of St. Chrysostom; in the Alternative Forms of Morning and Evening Worship before or after the Lord’s Prayer; in the Litany before the Prayer of St. Chrysostom; and in The Holy Communion after the Collect of the Day or before the Blessing.

Before any of these prayers may be said, Let us pray for …, or similar words.

THE WORLD

For Peace

Almighty God, from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed; Kindle in the hearts of all people the true love of peace, and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the world; that in tranquility your kingdom may go forward until the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Almighty God, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, king of all; Govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and rent asunder by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AMEN.

For the Nations of the World

Almighty and everlasting God, we rejoice that you are the sovereign Lord that rules over all: may the nations of the world hear your voice and the peoples acknowledge you. Banish the darkness of sin and unbelief. Break down every barrier that stands in the way of the triumph of your Word and gospel and hasten the day when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. We ask this in his name, and to his glory. AMEN.

For North America

Almighty and merciful God, who in the days of our forebears gave to this land the blessing of your holy Church; Do not withdraw, we pray, your favor from us, but so correct what is wrong and supply what is lacking, that we may more and more bear fruit to your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

PASTORAL

For Catechumens

O Lord Jesus Christ, Good Shepherd, you laid down your life for the sheep; mercifully receive this brother into your fold. Join him with your own flock, and lead him to the pleasant pastures of everlasting life; for thy mercy’s sake. AMEN.

For Candidates for Confirmation

Bless, we pray, heavenly Father, those soon to present themselves here, to make their profession of faith in your Son Jesus Christ, acknowledging him as their Savior and Lord before your people, and confirming for themselves the promises made on their behalf at their baptism. Grant that their profession of faith will be a true one. May they always be unswerving in their devotion to the One whom they now call Master, Teacher, and Friend. Keep them always obedient to your holy will and commandments, and faithful in the fellowship of your Church, and in the service of your Kingdom, to the glory of the great Head of the Church, our Lord Jesus Christ. AMEN.

A Prayer in Time of Drought, Flood, or Wildfire

All things look to you, O Lord, to give them food in due season: look in mercy on your people, and hear our prayer for those whose lives and livelihood are threatened by drought (or flood or fire). In your mercy save both man and beast. Guide and bless the labors of your people, that we may enjoy the fruits of the earth and give you thanks with grateful hearts. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ. AMEN.

In a Time of Disaster

Lord Jesus Christ, you once used the tragic death of the eighteen upon whom the tower of Siloam fell to warn us that those whom disaster strikes are not worse offenders than all others; and that unless we repent, we will all likewise perish. Let us take this warning to heart in the light of the recent earthquake/flooding/hurricane/mud slides/tidal wave/tornado in …, and turn from our sins. Comfort and relieve those affected by that disaster. Help them to rebuild their shattered lives. May they also be put in mind of their need for repentance, and may they come to receive that forgiveness of sins that can only be theirs by faith in you. This we ask for your name’s sake. AMEN.

Rain

God our heavenly Father through your Son you promised to those seeking first your kingdom and your righteousness all things necessary for their bodily welfare: send us, we pray, in this time of need, rain to water the earth, that we may receive its produce to strengthen and sustain us and always praise you for its bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

For Children

Lord Jesus Christ, you embrace children with the arms of your mercy, and makes them living members of your Church: Give them grace, we pray, to stand fast in your faith, to obey your word, and to abide in your love; that, being strengthened by your Holy Spirit, they may resist temptation and overcome evil, and may rejoice in the life that now is, and dwell with you in the life that is to come; through your merits, merciful Savior, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. AMEN.

For Christian Teachers

Almighty Father, you sent your only Son that all people might be saved: Enable those who teach so to consecrate their lives that, being themselves led by you, they may lead the children in their charge in the paths of everlasting life; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. AMEN.

For the Homeless

Have compassion, Lord, on all who are poor and homeless or who live in overcrowded conditions; give them strength and hope and keep them close to you. Help us to work and pray for the day when all your children are housed and healthy, and free to live full and happy lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who had nowhere to lay his head. AMEN

For the Hungry

Lord, we lift up to you the hungry people of the world. May the love of Christ move the hearts of all who have much, to share with all who have nothing, for it is in sharing that we are blessed. And move us to give generously to those in need, not only of our money but also of the abundance of our stores, so that no child of God will suffer want, when there is so much around. Grant this our prayer, for your name’s sake. AMEN.

For Prisoners

O God, you spare us when we deserve punishment, and in your wrath remember mercy: we humbly pray that you, of your goodness, will comfort and succor all prisoners. Give them a right understanding of themselves, and of your warnings and promises, that they may put their confidence in you, and in you alone. Relieve the distressed, protect the innocent, and awaken the guilty. In the Ember Weeks, to be said very day, for those that are to be admitted into Holy Orders

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, by the precious blood of your Son Jesus Christ you purchased for yourself a universal Church. Look upon your Church and at this time so guide and govern the minds of your servants the bishops and the pastors of your flock, they may not lay hands suddenly on any one, but faithfully and wisely make choice of fit persons to serve in the sacred ministry of your Church. To those who shall be ordained to any holy function give your grace and heavenly blessing; that both by their example and teaching they may declare your glory, and advance the salvation of all mankind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. So fill them with your truth and clothe them with holiness that they may faithfully minister to the glory of your name and to the benefit of your people. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

For Unity

O God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Savior, the Prince of Peace: Give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions; take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatever else may hinder us from godly union and concord; that, as there is but one Body and one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may be all of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: Regard not our sins, but the faith of your Church, and grant it that peace and unity that is agreeable to your will; who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
